INTERNET USE POLICY
All Internet use must comply with the Acceptable Computer Use Policy. In addition, the user must be 18 years of age or older or have written permission from a parent or guardian.
Disclaimer: The Internet contains many valuable resources but there is no federal, state or local control of its users or content. The Internet may contain material of a controversial nature. Since the Internet changes each minute as new computers connect and existing computers add or delete information, it is technically impossible to prevent access to resources that may be inaccurate, defamatory, illegal, or potentially objectionable to some people. The library staff cannot monitor or control access to such material nor protect users from offensive material on the Internet. Users are cautioned that the accuracy, completeness and currency of information found on the Internet varies widely. Critical judgment should be used to evaluate all sources.
A special note to parents: The Internet's and World Wide Web's "user friendliness" and easy access a wide range of information resources demands diligent and thoughtful parental supervision. It should be understood that the Brookston-Prairie Township Public Library and its staff cannot act as a censors nor substitute parents. While the library provides "blocking software" to prevent access to materials that would not be generally acceptable, it is technically impossible to prevent access to all objectionable resources. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to provide the necessary supervision to ensure their children's use of the Internet in an appropriate and safe manner.
Anyone under the age of 18 must have a signed permission slip from his or her parent(s) to use the Internet.
Inappropriate use: The use of the Internet is a privilege and access is conditional upon the users compliance with the Internet Use Policy and with the continued availability of the Internet. Inappropriate use, as determined by the library, will result in immediate cessation and or disciplinary action. Inappropriate use includes, but is not limited to:
- accessing, transmitting, uploading, downloading, or distributing pornographic obscene, abusive, or sexually explicit material or language;
- violating any local, state, or federal statute;
- vandalizing, damaging, or disabling the property of another individual or organization;
- violating copyright or otherwise using intellectual property of another individual or organization without permission.
E-mail: The library does not provide electronic mail (e-mail) accounts. If you have an existing e-mail account, you may access your e-mail from the library's computer providing you do not store any files on the library's computers.
Downloading: No files may be downloaded to the library computers' hard drives. All files must be downloaded to the user's floppy disks. Floppy disks are for sale at the main desk courtesy of the Friends of the Library. We strongly advise the use of virus detection software before using files downloaded from the Internet. The library assumes no responsibility for damages to a user's computer, disks, or files.
Staff Assistance: Staff provide limited assistance for basic start up procedures. If users have never used computers or have specific questions about the Internet, circulating books and reference books are available. Introductory instruction on Internet access and searching suggestions will be available from time to time.
Indemnity: The Brookston-Prairie Township Public Library makes no warranties of any kind, neither expressed nor implied, for the Internet access it is providing. The library is not responsible for the accuracy, nature, or quality of information gathered through library-provided Internet access. In consideration of the Brookston-Prairie Township Public Library providing users with access to the Internet, users agree to hold the library harmless and agree to indemnify the library from any and all liability arising out of the user’s use of the Internet.
